About

As far back as 1869, Almshouse flats have provided accommodation for single people and couples in Nechells.

Elizabeth and Emma James provided the land and, 150 years later, The James Charities continue to prosper and make homes available.

Many improvements have been made to modernise the flats to ensure residents are afforded high standard, secure accommodation.

Residents benefit from emergency pull-cords connected to a 24-hour response service.

Cher McLeggan

Since November 2023, Cher McLeggan has been the Manager at the James Memorial Homes. She manages contractors on site, carries out health and safety checks and provides a first-class service for residents. A graduate of the University of Wolverhampton, Cher has many years of experience working in older people’s housing. She works collaboratively with the CEO to overcome challenges.

William Coffin

Starting at the James Charities in August 2021, William Coffin is the CEO. He supports the Directors in processing applications, ensuring compliance with policies, financial management and developing the charity. William has worked for multiple local, national and international charities. He works collaboratively with the Manager to resolve any issues that arise.
Sharing responsibility for governing the James Charities is a Board of Directors. The Directors possess a wide range of skills and experiences, much of it gained from working in the Nechells area. The Board ensure the smooth running and develop future plans for this busy charity.

We are looking for new directors to strengthen and refresh the board. Local knowledge is an advantage but not essential.
